Fred C. Newmeyer was an American film director and actor. He was born on August 9, 1888, in Central City, Kentucky, and grew up in Nebraska. He began his career in the film industry as an actor, appearing in silent films such as The Virginian (1914) and The Sea Lion (1921). Newmeyer eventually transitioned to directing and became a prolific filmmaker during the silent era. He is best known for directing the iconic silent comedy film, The Freshman (1925), starring Harold Lloyd. Newmeyer worked with many of the most famous comedians of his time, including Laurel and Hardy and Buster Keaton. He continued to direct into the sound era but later shifted to producing and writing. Newmeyer passed away on April 24, 1967, in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 78.
